Maryville, TN – The Maryville Police Department recently recognized several community members for their actions following a serious crash involving one of the department’s officers.

Police Chief Tony Jay Crisp presented the department’s Citizen Service Award to Daniel Varady and Megan Herrera during a ceremony held May 19. Stephanie Paul, who was also recognized for her actions, was unable to attend.

According to the department, the three individuals assisted Field Training Officer Justin Brown following a serious accident on Nov. 14, 2025, during the escort of Vice President J.D. Vance.

Officials said the citizens immediately rushed to help Officer Brown and provided life-saving assistance and support at the scene.

The Citizen Service Award is presented to individuals who demonstrate courage, compassion, and selfless actions during emergencies or crisis situations.

Department officials stated the recipients’ quick response played a critical role in helping save the officer’s life.

The department also expressed appreciation to additional community members who stopped to help at the scene but were unable to be identified.

Officials said the actions of those involved reflected the strength and character of the Maryville community.
