KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) provided an update this week on the ongoing construction work along I-40, which was severely impacted by flooding from Hurricane Helene. Crews are continuing their efforts to stabilize sections of the highway, with soil nails being installed to reinforce the roadbed.
Originally, NCDOT officials had hoped to reopen the road by January, but additional complications, including a further collapse of the roadway, have delayed the timeline. The agency now aims for the highway to be partially reopened by this spring, though it will not return to its full pre-Hurricane Helene condition. The road will feature one lane in each direction, with a median curb separating the 40mph traffic.
“We are targeting a reopening this spring when engineers deem the road is safe for drivers,” an NCDOT spokesperson said. “However, it’s important to note that the road will not be fully restored to its original state. The temporary lane configuration will remain in place for the time being.”
Meanwhile, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is advising drivers to plan ahead and use alternate routes to bypass the closed section of I-40. For those traveling to North Carolina, the recommended detour includes taking I-81 North to I-26 East or I-77 South.
Officials emphasized the importance of adhering to these rerouted paths to ensure smoother traffic flow and avoid delays caused by the ongoing construction.
While the road is set to reopen in stages, it remains unclear when full restoration will be completed. For now, drivers are urged to stay informed of construction updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
