MARYVILLE, Tenn. — In a move aimed at accommodating the growing needs of Maryville High School, city officials have approved a $55 million bond for a major expansion of the school’s facilities. The project, which will unfold in multiple stages to minimize disruptions to daily classes, is set to transform the campus with the addition of a new performing arts center and a three-story building featuring 48 new classrooms.

The expansion, which is designed to be a 25-year solution to handle both current and future student growth, will also provide much-needed upgrades to various aspects of the school’s infrastructure. The new building will feature state-of-the-art labs, including four new chemistry labs, biology labs, health science labs, and modern art classrooms.

“This is a huge milestone for Maryville City and Maryville City Schools,” said Dr. Mike Winstead, Director of Maryville City Schools. “The expansion addresses our urgent need for more space and will ensure we’re able to provide a quality education to our students in a facility that meets modern standards.”

The expansion is largely driven by the rapid growth in the district’s student population. During the pandemic, Maryville City Schools saw an influx of approximately 600 new students, most of whom relocated from out of state. This sharp increase, coupled with the district’s annual growth of 50 to 60 students, has made the expansion a necessity to keep up with the demand for educational space.

In addition to new classrooms, the school will also see improvements to its kitchen, cafeteria, roads, and parking lots. These upgrades are intended to address the strain on existing facilities and provide a safer, more efficient environment for both students and staff.

“We’ve been using some rooms that weren’t originally designed to be classrooms, and some teachers have had to share spaces. This expansion will help us meet the growing needs of our student body,” explained Winstead.

The expansion also comes as a welcome change for students, particularly those involved in extracurricular programs. One student in the high school’s theater program expressed excitement about the new performing arts center, noting that it would provide more opportunities for students to excel.

“I moved here with my sister in 2023, and it’s been amazing to watch the town grow. It’s definitely needed, especially with how well our theater program has been doing. I can’t wait to see how the new facilities help us improve even more,” said the student.

The $55 million bond approval marks a significant investment in the future of Maryville’s educational system and the community at large. As the city continues to grow, the expansion of Maryville High School is a crucial step in ensuring that the school is able to provide an excellent education to students for years to come.
