Knoxville Priest Placed on Leave Amid Boundary Violation Allegations

Maryville, TN — Father Joseph Reed, a priest at the Diocese of Knoxville, has been placed on administrative leave following a complaint of “boundary violations,” according to a letter shared with parishioners earlier this week. The Diocese announced the decision as part of its adherence to the Diocese of Knoxville’s Safe Environment Policy, which seeks to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within the church community.

The complaint involving Father Reed was reported to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, which has confirmed that an “open/active investigation” is underway. Additionally, the Department of Children’s Services has launched its own investigation into the matter. The Diocese of Knoxville, in compliance with its protocol, has also reported the issue to state authorities.

In a statement, the Diocese emphasized that while Father Reed is on leave, the presumption of innocence remains in place until the investigation reaches its conclusion. The Diocese also pledged to conduct an independent and comprehensive review once the civil authorities have completed their investigation.

“The primary concern of the Diocese is the protection of those in our care and ensuring a fair, comprehensive review of the allegations,” the letter from the Diocese read.

Father Reed has been serving as the pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and School, a position he has held for some time. In his absence, Father Michael Maples will oversee the pastoral needs of the parish and provide support to the community during this uncertain period.

The Diocese called on parishioners to offer prayers, compassion, and respect for all those involved in the situation. As is standard practice in such cases, the Diocese emphasized the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without premature judgment.

The case has drawn attention not only from local authorities but also from the broader church community, as it raises concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals within religious institutions. While the investigation remains ongoing, both civil and religious authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough review.

As of now, no further details have been released regarding the specifics of the complaint against Father Reed, and authorities are urging the public to refrain from speculation as the investigation continues.
