Knoxville, Tenn. — The City of Knoxville is continuing its commitment to expanding affordable housing options through a series of new developments, with support from both public and private funding sources. During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, members approved significant investments aimed at creating more affordable rental units across the city.
Over $500,000 from the city’s Affordable Rental Development Fund will be allocated to two key projects: the development of 10 affordable apartments at 2226 Parkview Avenue and 15 units at 2501 Edgewood Avenue. These developments are part of the city’s broader effort to meet growing housing demand for low- and moderate-income residents. In addition to city funds, the United Way of Greater Knoxville has contributed $570,000 in philanthropic support to both the Parkview and Edgewood Apartments.
In a show of collaboration between the city and local philanthropists, several private donors are also helping fund these projects. Notable contributors include Randy Boyd, the Haslam Family, Clayton Homes, and the Lawson Family Foundations, all of which have partnered with the city to help address Knoxville’s affordable housing shortage.
“The support from private donors and local organizations underscores the community’s commitment to ensuring that affordable housing is accessible for those in need,” said one city official.
In another major housing initiative, the City Council approved the allocation of $1 million in federal funds from the HOME American Rescue Plan Program to fund the construction of 18 new apartments at 1585 Coleman Road. This development will focus on providing housing for young people who are aging out of the foster care system.
The project aims to offer stable housing for vulnerable youth who often face significant challenges as they transition to adulthood without the support structures they need. The apartments will serve as a critical resource for helping these individuals successfully navigate this transition and secure a brighter future.
