Knoxville, TN – A tragic crash on Chapman Highway claimed the life of a 46-year-old man and left another driver injured on Monday, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) report.
The accident occurred near 10023 Chapman Highway, a stretch of U.S. 411, when Benjamin Jones, of Knoxville, was driving a 2013 GMC Sierra northbound. For reasons that remain unclear, Jones crossed into the opposite lane of traffic, colliding head-on with a 2007 Honda Ridgeline driven by 72-year-old Randall Shelley.
Jones, who was severely injured in the collision, was pronounced dead at the scene. Shelley, the driver of the Honda, sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, and an investigation is ongoing. The impact of the crash caused significant damage to both vehicles, with both drivers trapped in their respective cars upon arrival of emergency responders.
Chapman Highway, a busy route for commuters in the area, was temporarily shut down as authorities cleared the wreckage and conducted their investigation.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to examine the factors that led to the crash, though weather conditions at the time were not cited as a contributing factor.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of head-on collisions and the importance of road safety. Both the THP and local law enforcement agencies are urging drivers to remain vigilant, especially on high-traffic roads like Chapman Highway.
The identities of the victims were confirmed by the THP, and further updates will be provided as more details become available.
