Friendsville, Tenn. – A tow truck driver was hospitalized with serious injuries on Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle while working along Big Springs Road near Nola Lane in Blount County.

According to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. where they found the tow truck driver, who had been securing a car onto the rollback bed of his truck. The incident occurred when an 81-year-old woman, driving a white Mercedes-Benz CLE, attempted to pass the tow truck and collided with the driver, who was on foot at the time.

The tow truck driver was immediately transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. His current condition remains unknown.

Reports indicate that at the time of the crash, the tow truck was partially parked in the roadway with its flashing lights activated. However, the driver was not wearing a safety vest, which may have contributed to the severity of the accident. The woman behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz told deputies that she had been trying to pass the vehicle when she struck the tow truck driver.

The crash serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by roadside workers and the need for greater caution when driving in areas where such workers are present. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather information.

Blount County officials urge drivers to remain alert when approaching any roadside work and to always yield to workers, especially when vehicles are parked with active warning lights.
