KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A high-speed chase that began in Sweetwater on Monday morning concluded in downtown Knoxville after spanning multiple counties. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WVLT News that the pursuit began in Sweetwater after officers attempted to pull over a vehicle for a registration violation.
According to the Sweetwater Police Department (SPD), the driver, later identified as Nathan Hatfield, and his passenger, a woman whose identity remains undisclosed, provided false names during the traffic stop. Shortly thereafter, Hatfield fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit through Monroe and Loudon counties before eventually reaching Knox County.
Law enforcement officials deployed stop sticks on Interstate 40 East near Hall of Fame Drive, effectively halting the fleeing vehicle. Both Hatfield and the unidentified passenger were taken into custody without further incident.
During the chase, SPD officials reported that the suspects discarded over an ounce of methamphetamine from the vehicle. A detective later recovered the drugs, adding another layer of charges against the driver.
Hatfield now faces several charges, including felony evading arrest, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine for resale, tampering with evidence, criminal impersonation, and driving on a revoked license. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies, along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, assisted in the pursuit. Authorities also stated that no injuries were reported during the incident.
The event highlights the coordinated efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies to bring a dangerous situation to a close, ensuring public safety and preventing further escalation.
