KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A retired captain with the Knoxville Fire Department, Dennis Noe, was fatally shot in a tragic accident Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 640 West. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is currently investigating the incident, which took place near Millertown Pike around 5:40 p.m.

According to KPD, the shooting occurred inside a vehicle traveling westbound on I-640 when two individuals in the back seat were handling a firearm. The gun discharged accidentally, striking Noe, who was sitting in the front seat of the car.

Officers arrived at the scene to find Noe suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Knoxville Fire Department (KFD) issued a statement on Thursday expressing their sorrow over Noe’s passing. “We are with heavy hearts this morning from the passing of one of our brothers,” the statement read. “His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers. We thank you for your service and it is our pleasure to have known you.”

At the scene, all individuals involved in the incident were detained for questioning. However, as of now, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

KPD continues to gather details about the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the accidental shooting. As the investigation unfolds, both the community and the fire department mourn the loss of a respected and dedicated public servant.
