McGhee Tyson Airport Prepares for Spring Break Travel Surge with Traffic and Parking Adjustments

Knoxville, Tenn. – McGhee Tyson Airport is bracing for a significant increase in passenger traffic as Spring Break approaches. To accommodate the surge and ensure safety, airport officials have announced a series of traffic changes and travel tips for those flying out or picking up passengers.

From Thursday, March 6 through Monday, March 10, the airport’s main entrance off Alcoa Highway will be closed from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. each night. During this time, all traffic will be redirected to the Hunt Road exit, with signage in place to guide drivers to the terminal. The same closure will occur on March 13-18 and March 20-24. However, traffic from the north on Alcoa Highway will remain unaffected, and the exit process will proceed as usual.

In addition to the closure of the main entrance, the airport will also relocate its parking garage entrance starting next week. While the new entrance will be located near the current one, officials advise drivers to remain aware of the change, though it is not expected to alter the planned routes significantly.

As travelers prepare for busier-than-usual conditions, airport officials are offering several tips to ensure smoother travel through the airport:

  • Check FlyKnoxville.com for real-time parking availability and choose the most convenient option.
  • Download your airline’s app to receive up-to-date flight information, including boarding passes and luggage details.
  • Pack light and ensure medications, personal items, and a change of clothes are packed in a carry-on bag.
  • Be mindful of your airline’s carry-on size requirements.
  • Arrive at least two hours before your scheduled departure time to allow ample time for security and boarding.

For those picking up passengers at McGhee Tyson, airport officials remind the public that the curbside is designated only for pick-ups and drop-offs, and parking at or near the curb is not permitted. To avoid traffic congestion, travelers are encouraged to use the Phone & Wait Lot, a free area where they can wait in their vehicles until their passengers are ready to meet them on the lower level.

With these changes and tips in place, McGhee Tyson Airport is working to ensure a smoother and safer experience for all travelers during the Spring Break period.
