Long-Awaited Road Widening Project on Carpenter Grade Road Set to Begin

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — After more than a decade of planning, construction on the long-anticipated road widening project on Carpenter Grade Road in Maryville is set to begin on March 3. The project, which has been a topic of discussion among residents and city officials for years, will bring significant infrastructure changes to the area, particularly at the intersections of Raulston Road and Cochran Road.

The roadwork, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving overall safety, is expected to cause some disruptions for homeowners in the vicinity, especially during the utility relocation phase. City officials have warned that residents may experience temporary inconveniences as crews move utilities to accommodate the upcoming changes.

The project was initially proposed in 2009, and after several years of planning and environmental assessments, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) authorized the necessary studies in 2018. In 2019, a public information meeting was held to inform local residents about the project’s scope and impact. After years of preparation, the green light for construction was given in September 2024.

Cleary Construction Inc. has been awarded the contract for the road widening project, with work slated to be completed by 2026. The improvements are expected to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide a safer driving experience for residents and commuters.

As work progresses, residents and motorists are advised to stay informed about potential road closures and detours. Updates on the project will be made available through local government channels and TDOT.

For more information, residents are encouraged to visit the official project website or contact city officials for the latest updates.
