Maryville, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is calling on East Tennesseans to reduce their electricity consumption as power demand in the region surges. TVA officials, in coordination with local utilities including Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB), have issued a request for increased conservation efforts to help avoid potential service disruptions.
In a statement, Gabriel J. Bolas, president and CEO of KUB, emphasized the importance of these actions: “We appreciate our customers joining us in these steps to reduce the strain on TVA’s grid,” Bolas said. “While this is a precautionary measure, it can have a big impact as we work to meet the demand for electricity.”
The TVA’s plea for conservation follows the temporary shutdown of three of its nuclear reactors due to ongoing electrical issues, which has led to a strained power supply. As a result, TVA officials have advised customers throughout East Tennessee to take steps to alleviate the pressure on the grid.
For households, KUB has suggested several key measures:
- Lower thermostats to safe and comfortable levels to reduce heating demand.
- Avoid using large electrical appliances such as dishwashers, dryers, and cooking equipment. If use is necessary, schedule them during the warmest parts of the day when electricity demand is typically lower.
- Eliminate non-essential electricity use, including decorative lighting for hallways, walkways, and patios.
Businesses in the region have also been asked to reduce their energy consumption. They are encouraged to minimize lighting and ensure that all non-essential office equipment is turned off when not in use.
With continued cooperation from the community, TVA officials are hopeful that these energy-saving measures will help maintain power availability as they work to resolve the current grid challenges.
