Blount County, Tenn. – A devastating house fire on Payne Hollow Road in Walland has left three people dead and the local community in shock. The fire, which occurred on Sunday, January 21, prompted an immediate response from the Blount County Fire Protection District. After extinguishing the flames, authorities discovered three bodies inside the home.
Preliminary autopsy results have confirmed that the manner of death for all three victims was homicide, though authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased. The remains were sent for further examination, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Johnny Ray Wilburn, a friend of the victims, was arrested and charged with homicide following the tragic event. Wilburn, who had been staying with the victims, is currently being held on a $750,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, January 27.
The victims, described by friends as kind-hearted and selfless, were well-known in the community. Terry Wilburn, a close friend of the Farley family, shared his shock and disbelief in an emotional interview. According to Terry, the Farleys, who he met nearly ten years ago, were “the kindest people you’d ever come across.” He explained that they had opened their home to Johnny Ray Wilburn when he had nowhere else to stay.
“They just had the biggest hearts,” Terry Wilburn said, reflecting on the kindness of Marty, Kay, and Cas Farley. “They would help anyone who needed it.”
Terry recalled the Farleys’ warm and welcoming personalities, with Marty known for his infectious smile and Kay’s lighthearted, playful nature. “She was kind of like a little cut-up,” he said of Kay. “Just as wonderful as she could be.”
The arrest of Johnny Ray Wilburn has left the community reeling, as many struggle to understand how someone who was once welcomed into the family could be involved in such a horrific crime. Friends and loved ones continue to mourn the loss of three lives that were taken far too soon.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and as of now, the exact motive behind the fire and the murders remains unclear. The Blount County community, known for its tight-knit nature, is left to grapple with the shock of the loss and the unsettling question of what led to this tragedy.
