Maryville, TN — The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) has launched an investigation following a fatal crash late Friday night on the Hall of Fame Drive exit ramp from I-40 West.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle that had run off the road and into a wooded area, where it subsequently caught fire. Upon arriving at the scene, KPD officers found the car engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside.
In a desperate attempt to rescue the victim, officers used fire extinguishers to control the flames and smashed the car windows in an effort to extract the driver. Despite their best efforts, the fire quickly overtook the vehicle, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, as the body was transported to the Regional Forensic Center for positive identification and further examination. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
KPD has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. Authorities are looking into all possible factors that could have contributed to the crash, including road conditions, weather, and any potential mechanical issues with the vehicle.
