Blount County, Tenn. — A deadly house fire in Blount County has left three people dead and one individual facing homicide charges, sending shockwaves through the local community.

On Sunday, January 21, emergency responders with the Blount County Fire Protection District arrived at a residence on Payne Hollow Road in Walland. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, only to discover three bodies inside the home. Authorities have confirmed the remains were sent for autopsies, and preliminary results indicate that the cause of death for all three victims was homicide.

The victims have been identified as Marty Farley, his wife Kay, and his brother Cas. According to friends of the family, the Farleys were known for their kind, down-to-earth nature. Terry Wilburn, a close friend who had known the family for nearly a decade, described them as “the kindest people you’d ever come across.”

“We met them at a place where karaoke was going on. We just started talking and became great friends. They were just as nice as you could get,” Wilburn recalled. “They had the biggest hearts and were always willing to help someone out.”

The arrest of Johnny Ray Wilburn, a man with ties to the Farley family, shocked the community. Wilburn, 52, has been charged with three counts of criminal homicide. He was taken into custody on Tuesday, and his bond has been set at $750,000. According to Wilburn’s longtime friend, Terry Wilburn, the Farleys had opened their home to Johnny Ray Wilburn when he had nowhere else to stay.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Terry Wilburn said. “They took this man in, and they were like that to everyone. They always helped people. I can’t believe something like this could happen.”

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officials have not yet disclosed a potential motive for the killings. The community, left in disbelief, is rallying behind the Farley family’s surviving relatives.

Johnny Ray Wilburn is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, January 27.
