Maryville, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced the appointment of Don Moul as its new president and CEO, effective April 9. Moul, who has served as TVA’s executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) since June 2021, succeeds Jeff Lyash, who is retiring after leading the agency for several years.
Moul becomes the fourth CEO in TVA’s history, a pivotal moment for the utility as it navigates a period of rapid change and growth in the energy sector. TVA’s Board of Directors made the announcement on Monday, citing Moul’s extensive experience and leadership in driving the organization’s nuclear energy initiatives.
In a statement, Jeff Lyash, who announced his retirement plans in January, expressed confidence in Moul’s ability to lead TVA into the future. “Don is the right choice to lead TVA forward as we work to build an energy system to power the next generation of American jobs,” Lyash said. “He is ready to guide TVA during this critical time of transformation, and his leadership in advancing next-generation nuclear technologies will be instrumental in TVA’s continued success.”
Moul’s leadership at TVA has been marked by his focus on nuclear energy, which is seen as a cornerstone of TVA’s strategy to provide reliable, low-carbon power. As COO, Moul was integral to the development of innovative nuclear technologies, positioning TVA as a leader in the field. His appointment signals the utility’s ongoing commitment to nuclear power, which remains one of the most reliable and efficient energy sources in the world.
In addition to his new role at TVA, Moul was recently appointed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to the Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council. This council is focused on promoting nuclear innovation and fostering investment in Tennessee’s growing nuclear energy ecosystem.
Moul’s selection comes amid a period of turbulence within TVA’s leadership. Just days before the announcement, President Donald Trump ordered the removal of TVA board member Michelle Moore, further highlighting the complex dynamics at play within the agency’s governance. However, Moul’s extensive background in nuclear energy and his leadership at TVA have positioned him to navigate these challenges and continue the organization’s mission of providing reliable and affordable energy to the Tennessee Valley region.
With Moul at the helm, TVA is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in energy innovation, particularly in nuclear energy, as the organization adapts to the evolving needs of the American energy landscape.
