KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Governor Bill Lee revealed a comprehensive $450 million relief package aimed at assisting Tennessee residents and communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. The announcement, made on Wednesday, is set to be a key focus during the governor’s upcoming special session on January 27.

The state’s investment will be distributed across several initiatives to address the extensive damage caused by the storm, which is estimated to have resulted in $1.2 billion in losses.

The relief package is divided into four main components:

  1. $240 Million for Disaster Relief Fund
A significant portion of the funding, $240 million, will be allocated to bolster Tennessee’s disaster relief fund. This investment is expected to reduce the cost-share burden for affected counties, bringing the contribution rate from 12.5% down to 5%. This reduction will make it easier for local governments to manage recovery efforts.
  2. $110 Million for Helene-Specific Recovery Fund
In addition to the general disaster relief fund, Governor Lee’s plan includes a $110 million allocation to establish a new fund dedicated specifically to Hurricane Helene recovery. The fund will provide financial resources to local governments for recovery loan interest costs, helping to ease the financial strain on municipalities as they rebuild.
  3. $100 Million for Emergency Response Programs
The state has also committed $100 million to create a new program focused on providing financial support for future emergencies. The program is designed to aid in agricultural recovery, offer unemployment assistance, and support business recovery efforts in the aftermath of major disasters.
  4. $20 Million for Hampton High School Reconstruction
Finally, $20 million will be dedicated to rebuilding Hampton High School in Carter County, which suffered significant damage during the storm. This investment reflects the state’s commitment to restoring vital educational infrastructure in affected areas.

The special session will also address other key issues, including the Education Freedom Act, commonly known as the school voucher bill. Governor Lee’s comprehensive relief plan aims to provide much-needed support to the state’s recovery efforts and strengthen Tennessee’s resilience in the face of future disasters.
