Maryville, TN — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is conducting an inquiry into an officer-involved shooting that unfolded in Monroe County on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred when deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fallen tree blocking the roadway in front of a home on Reed Springs Road in Philadelphia.
According to Sheriff Tommy Jones, deputies arrived on the scene around noon, where they encountered Richard Brown, the homeowner. Brown, who was wanted on an active felony warrant from Loudon County, initially stepped outside but retreated into his home after refusing to engage with the deputies. Authorities say Brown made violent statements as deputies attempted to communicate with him through the door.
As the situation escalated, a perimeter was established around the residence, and backup, including a SWAT team, was requested. Deputies announced themselves and asked Brown to exit the house. To force his compliance, they deployed non-lethal gas into the home. However, when officers attempted to breach the door, gunfire erupted from inside, striking Deputy Corporal Jason Goddard in the shoulder.
Deputy Goddard was immediately transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He was later released and is recovering at home, according to Detective Billy Littleton.
After several hours of standoff, Brown was eventually taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder, as well as resisting arrest and evading arrest. Brown is the only individual believed to have fired shots during the confrontation, Sheriff Jones confirmed.
The TBI is leading the ongoing investigation, with support from several local law enforcement agencies, including the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, Madisonville Police Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sweetwater Police Department, Loudon City Police Department, and the Monroe County Violent Crime Task Force. The investigation is still active, and additional details will be released as they become available.
