DEER LODGE, Tenn. – A powerful storm system that swept through East Tennessee on Thursday night has left two people dead and several others injured in Morgan County. The National Weather Service later confirmed that the damage was caused by an EF-2 tornado.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the victims were a mother and daughter, though no further details have been released at this time. Three additional individuals sustained injuries, but officials have indicated that they are expected to survive.
The tornado caused significant destruction, damaging more than a dozen homes across the county. Emergency crews quickly responded to the devastation, with a focus on areas along Highway 27, which was severely affected by the storm. In a statement posted to social media, Morgan County Sheriff Wayne Potter urged residents to avoid the area as recovery efforts began.
“We have significant damage in the area, and we are working with local, state, and federal resources to assist with recovery,” Sheriff Potter said.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has mobilized a strike team to assist with the ongoing response. Captain Stacey Heatherly confirmed that 30 troopers had been dispatched to the county to provide aid and help manage the situation. “Our mission is clear – to assist the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and ensure we support the local community during this crisis,” Heatherly stated Thursday evening.
As recovery efforts continue, authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and offer assistance to those affected.
