Knoxville, Tenn. — A disturbance at West Town Mall on Saturday night sparked rumors of a shooting, but authorities have confirmed that no gunfire occurred.
The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) responded to the scene just after 7 p.m. following reports of a disturbance involving juveniles. Upon arrival, KPD officers were alerted to the possibility of a shooting, based on second-hand information circulating among the public. However, after conducting a thorough investigation, law enforcement determined that there was no shooting, and no weapon was found at the scene.
Phil Keith, former Knoxville Police Chief, explained the urgency and protocols involved when responding to potential active shooter situations. “When you get there, you’ve got to do an assessment very quickly,” Keith said. “You’ve got to determine whether or not there was an active shooter, where the sound came from, and where people are fleeing from. That’s why law enforcement always runs towards the danger.”
The confusion surrounding the incident highlights the challenges that law enforcement faces in distinguishing between real threats and false alarms. Keith emphasized the increasing fear within the public when it comes to potential gunfire, noting that, over the last few decades, active shooter incidents have led to heightened concern. “You can’t train everyone on what a real gunshot sounds like, or if somebody’s pulled a prank,” he said. “There’s a lot of variety.”
This is not the first time KPD has responded to shots fired reports at West Town Mall. In March 2024, officers were called to the mall after reports of gunshots near the Belk store. In that case, KPD found shell casings, arrested four juveniles, and recovered three firearms.
While Saturday’s disturbance turned out to be a false alarm, it serves as a reminder of the importance of swift and decisive responses by law enforcement in potentially dangerous situations.
