Knoxville, Tenn. – Emergency responders from the Rural Metro Fire Department were called to a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on East Raccoon Valley Road in North Knox County. The crash, which took place in the 5900 block, was reported just after 6:00 a.m., but authorities later confirmed it occurred the previous evening.
According to Rural Metro Fire Department officials, the vehicle had gone off the road and down an embankment, which delayed the discovery of the crash until morning. A man, the sole occupant of the car, had to be rescued from the wreckage. He was subsequently airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he was reported to be in serious condition.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have confirmed that East Raccoon Valley Road has since reopened to traffic.
Further updates regarding the condition of the driver and the investigation are expected as more information becomes available.
