KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 640 in Knoxville. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) responded to the scene near Millertown Pike at approximately 5:40 p.m., after receiving reports of a shooting inside a moving vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was quickly transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

KPD officials believe the shooting was accidental, with another occupant in the vehicle unintentionally discharging a firearm, striking the victim. All individuals involved in the incident were detained at the scene for questioning.

At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, according to KPD.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the gunfire. The case remains under investigation as police work to determine exactly how the firearm was discharged.
