Knoxville, Tenn. — A 38-year-old Knoxville man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred near downtown in 2023.
Jayshawn Williams was convicted for the May 3, 2023, killing of 35-year-old Travis Brown. According to District Attorney Charme Allen, Williams shot and killed Brown in a violent and senseless act that has left the victim’s family grieving.
“This is just a senseless and unexplainable loss of life that left a family without their loved one,” said Allen. “As we approach National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we remember and honor victims like the one in this tragic case.”
Williams, who has five prior felony convictions, was also noted to have ties to the 52 Hoover Crips gang, a factor that may have influenced the circumstances of the crime. His criminal history, combined with the gravity of the offense, contributed to his lengthy prison sentence.
The shooting has left the community reeling, with local leaders and residents expressing concern over the ongoing issues of violent crime. While the case has reached its legal conclusion, the emotional and social impact on Brown’s family remains deep.
As National Crime Victims’ Rights Week approaches, the case serves as a somber reminder of the importance of supporting victims and advocating for their rights in the face of such devastating loss.
