KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Knox County Board of Education has unanimously approved an agreement to move forward with the construction of a new elementary school in the Farragut area. The new school, which is set to cost approximately $43.7 million, will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade and is expected to be one of the largest elementary schools in the district’s history.

Located at 202 Village Commons Boulevard, the proposed school will occupy more than 144,000 square feet of space. This new facility is part of an ongoing effort to address the growing population in Farragut, as the area continues to experience rapid development.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Garfield Adams, expressed excitement over the project, emphasizing the importance of providing students with modern, spacious facilities to enhance their learning experiences. “When you have adequate space and state-of-the-art facilities, that is something that certainly enhances student learning,” said Adams.

Merit Construction, Inc. will oversee the building of the school, which will feature a one-story structure with three classroom wings. The school is designed to accommodate up to 1,400 students, providing much-needed capacity for the district as Farragut’s population expands.

The approval for the new school comes as part of the district’s five-year capital plan, which was previously approved by the school board. The $43.7 million budget also includes costs for public street improvements, parking, courtyards, fencing, and a playground/playfield area, all of which will contribute to the overall functionality and safety of the school.

Adams noted that the development of the new school was based on close collaboration with Knox County government officials, who helped assess projected population growth and its impact on local schools. “This additional elementary school will alleviate a lot of those concerns for parents and ensure that our students have the necessary capacity to enhance student learning,” he said.

The construction process is expected to take two years, with the new school slated to open its doors in the fall of 2027. Once completed, the new facility will also contribute to the district’s long-term goal of having three elementary schools in the Farragut area. Following the completion of the new school, Farragut Primary and Farragut Intermediate schools will be restructured into K-5 institutions, further addressing the area’s educational needs.

This development marks a significant step in the district’s efforts to keep pace with the area’s growth and provide students with the necessary resources for success.
