Mayville, TN — A tragic fire last month near South Flat Creek Road claimed the lives of two children, prompting an investigation by local authorities. According to Sevier County officials, the fire, which occurred in a family home, was caused by a kerosene heater.
The victims, identified as 15-year-old Esperanza Gutierrez and 8-year-old Mateo Gutierrez, were found dead after the blaze consumed the house. In a heartbreaking detail, it was revealed that Esperanza had initially escaped the fire but chose to re-enter the home in an attempt to rescue her younger brother. Unfortunately, neither of the siblings survived the devastating incident.
Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters expressed his condolences to the grieving family, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gutierrez family and all those affected by this devastating loss of two young lives.” He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of emergency responders who worked in difficult conditions following the fire.
Tyler Basler, Director of Public Affairs and Communications for Sevier County, confirmed the tragic incident and offered further details. The fire occurred on the night of the 8th of December, and the subsequent investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, the Sevier County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Authorities confirmed that the cause of the fire was indeed a kerosene heater.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Sevier County Schools district provided counseling services to students, as many were affected by the heartbreaking news. Tony Ogle, a representative from Sevier County Schools, emphasized that counselors were made available to support students in need.
