Maryville, TN – The Diocese of Knoxville has completed its investigation into Father Joseph Reed, a priest from Farragut, following concerning reports made last year. The priest was placed on leave in December after accusations emerged that he had violated boundaries within the Diocese’s Safe Environment Policy.
According to a statement from the Diocese, the investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), the Tennessee Department of Child Services (TDS), and the Diocese itself. KCSO concluded in January that the allegations against Father Reed were unsubstantiated, meaning no criminal activity was detected during their inquiry.
However, the Diocese conducted its own independent review, which has led to mixed results. An external investigator found no evidence to support claims of a crime, but the Diocesan Review Board determined that there was credible evidence to support the complaints made against Reed. The board noted that Reed had committed “frequent boundary violations with both minors and adults.” These violations, the board emphasized, were “frequent and consistent, grave and unbecoming of the Holy Priesthood.”
As a result, the Review Board has recommended that Reed be subject to strong oversight moving forward. They also suggested that he be assigned to a seasoned pastor who could provide close monitoring and mentoring. In response, Bishop Mark Beckman stated that he would be consulting with the Priest Personnel Board to determine Reed’s future assignment.
The Diocese reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all members of the community. “All clergy, staff, employees, and volunteers are required to complete Safe Environment training before they may begin participating with ministries, groups, and diocesan organizations,” the statement read.
Father Reed’s future within the Diocese remains uncertain, as further discussions are underway regarding his potential re-assignment and the nature of his continued role within the Church. The investigation highlights the Diocese’s ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing concerns related to clergy conduct.
