Jonesborough, Tenn. – A body discovered along the Nolichucky River has been identified as Steven Cloyd, a man who had been missing since flooding from Tropical Storm Helene struck Washington County earlier this month.
The remains were located Thursday afternoon in the 2000 block of Highway 107, near Jonesborough, after crews working to clear debris stumbled upon the body. Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton confirmed the identification, stating that investigators had worked closely with the medical examiner to confirm the identity.
“We continue to pray for the Cloyd family, and we hope this discovery brings them some measure of closure,” Sheriff Sexton said in an official statement.
Cloyd was one of two individuals still missing following the devastating floods caused by the storm. While his family now has confirmation of his death, the search continues for the second missing person, Nancy Tucker. Tucker’s whereabouts remain unknown as rescue teams work to recover her from the floodwaters.
The flooding, which was triggered by the heavy rains of Tropical Storm Helene, left significant damage across the region, causing widespread destruction and displacing residents. The recovery process remains ongoing, with authorities urging residents to stay alert as recovery efforts continue.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the storm, officials have reiterated their support for the families affected by the tragic loss of life. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office continues to keep the Cloyd and Tucker families in their thoughts during this difficult time.
