Maryville, Tenn. — A Blount County woman is facing second-degree murder charges following an investigation into the fatal overdose of 41-year-old Elliott Scruggs. Misty Denton Bobadilla, 46, was arrested in Blount County and later transferred to the Carter County Detention Center, where she is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
According to a news release from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), deputies were called to a residence on Cedar Grove Road on September 30, 2021, to investigate a possible cardiac arrest. Scruggs, who was found unresponsive, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid.
During the investigation, detectives examined Scruggs’ cellphone and discovered text messages that suggested Bobadilla had purchased narcotics for him shortly before his death. These findings led to Bobadilla’s arrest.
Sheriff Mike Fraley emphasized the dangers of fentanyl in the community, saying, “Drugs present a significant danger to our community, particularly fentanyl. Our officers are working diligently to slow down the influx of drugs into our community and to identify and prosecute those involved in drug trafficking. If you sell or give drugs to someone who overdoses, you will be held accountable for the consequences.”
Bobadilla is facing serious charges, which reflect the growing concern over fentanyl-related deaths in the region. The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the lethal consequences of drug trafficking and the commitment of local authorities to combat the ongoing opioid crisis.
As of Thursday, Bobadilla remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
