Amputee Inspires East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Patients with Remarkable Journey of Resilience

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In the wake of a devastating car crash that changed his life forever, Kyle Blassingame is using his story to inspire young patients at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Once a member of the track team and cheer squad at Tennessee Wesleyan University, Blassingame’s life took an unimaginable turn during a vacation in Charleston, South Carolina.

In 2016, while vacationing with his partner, Blassingame became the victim of a high-speed crash. A 16-year-old, who was fleeing police in a stolen car, crossed the median at over 100 mph, striking Blassingame’s vehicle head-on. The crash claimed the life of his partner and left Blassingame severely injured.

He was trapped in the wreckage for three hours before rescue teams arrived, and was then rushed to the hospital where he underwent seven surgeries. Doctors deemed his survival a miracle, with extensive damage to his eyes, ribs, spine, organs, and legs. His injuries were so severe that an infection from the crash led to the amputation of his leg after ocean water mixed with a compound fracture.

For months, Blassingame battled through physical and emotional pain, relearning how to walk and adjusting to his new reality. “Having someone so near and so close to me lose their life from the same incident… it’s almost like you are living your life for two people,” Blassingame said, reflecting on the traumatic loss of his partner.

Throughout his recovery, Blassingame’s resilience remained unwavering. He completed his degree in occupational therapy from his hospital bed, using his recovery as a stepping stone to strengthening both his body and career. His determination not only pushed him through the toughest period of his life but also ignited his passion to help others heal and grow.

Now, Blassingame is bringing his own brand of inspiration to the patients at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. As an occupational therapist, he works daily to motivate young patients facing their own challenges. His mission is simple: to help these children succeed, overcome their struggles, and reach for their dreams.

“My goal is to help them be as successful as possible and achieve those dreams,” Blassingame explained. “Just to show them I’m here every day through my struggles and differences and help show them and give them the courage to do the same.”

Blassingame’s personal journey, marked by tremendous loss and resilience, has turned him into a beacon of hope for the children he serves. By sharing his story and offering guidance, he’s not only helping them recover physically but also teaching them the strength that lies within to persevere, no matter the obstacles.

Through his work at the hospital, Blassingame continues to turn his pain into purpose, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope, healing, and strength can emerge.
