ALCOA, Tenn. — A grand jury has indicted Maurice Donnell Warren of Alcoa, Tennessee, on charges of being an accessory after the fact in connection with the death of Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan. Warren is accused of helping Kenneth DeHart, the man suspected of killing Deputy McCowan on February 8, 2024, by purchasing phones and SIM cards for him.
According to court records, Warren purchased the items from a store on Ray Mears Boulevard in Knoxville. The indictment alleges that Warren knew or had reasonable grounds to believe that DeHart had just committed murder and sought to assist him in avoiding capture. The grand jury returned the indictment on April 9, 2025.
In addition to the accessory charge, Warren faces a series of other serious charges related to an incident on September 29, 2023. These charges include possession of controlled substances, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as possession of a firearm with intent to commit a dangerous felony. Warren is also accused of taking a firearm without consent and maintaining a dwelling for drug use.
The case has drawn significant attention following the tragic killing of Deputy McCowan, who was shot and killed in the line of duty. DeHart, who was captured after a multi-day manhunt, is facing a host of charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felon in possession of a weapon. His trial is currently scheduled for 2026, making it one of the more high-profile cases in the region for the coming years.
Carrie Matthews, DeHart’s alleged girlfriend, was also indicted on two charges of accessory after the fact. Matthews is accused of assisting DeHart in avoiding arrest following the deputy’s killing.
