TOWNSEND, Tenn. — The sounds of bagpipes and the sights of tartan kilts will once again fill the air as the 43rd Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival & Games returns to Townsend on May 17 and 18. Celebrating Scottish heritage and Highland traditions, the event promises a weekend of cultural festivities, athletic competitions, and live entertainment.

Held at the Blount Partnership Townsend Visitor’s Center, the festival runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors can expect a full lineup of traditional Scottish events, including clan gatherings, sheep herding demonstrations, Scotch whisky tastings, and musical performances from artists across the country.

Athletic contests are central to the festival and include time-honored Highland games such as the open stone put, hammer throw, caber toss, and sheaf toss. These competitions highlight strength and technique and draw both seasoned athletes and curious newcomers.

Ticket prices range from $18 to $35, depending on the day and time of attendance. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance to save time at the gate. Discounts are available for seniors, students, first responders, veterans, and active-duty military members with valid ID. On-site parking is available for $10 per vehicle, with proceeds benefiting the Townsend Volunteer Fire Department.

One of the oldest Scottish festivals in the United States, the Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival & Games traces its roots back to 1981, when it began in Gatlinburg. After a long run at Maryville College, the festival found a new home in 2022 at the current venue near the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

With a blend of cultural pride, family-friendly fun, and competitive spirit, the festival continues to draw thousands each year. Organizers say the 2025 event will be no exception.

More information, including a full schedule and ticketing details, can be found on the festival’s official website.
